    • Police seek man in connection with murder (2012/1/25)
      Henrico Police are seeking the public's assistance in locating Jack Amos Lewis III, who is wanted on the charge of conspiracy to commit murder. The charge is in relation to the January 2009 murder of Tarik Cassells, which occurred in Henrico County. Police yesterday arrested and charged 23-year-old Laurie Brown of Varina and 26-year-old Davaughn Kidd of Richmond in connection with the incident.
    • Police arrest 2 in connection with West End burglaries (2012/1/24)
      Henrico County Police have made two arrests in connection with several burglaries in Henrico's West End, with the possibility of more charges as their investigation continues. Police this week arrested 25-year-old Benjamin O. Heslep, of the 5500 block of Cedar Croft Street, and 22-year-old Michele S. Rintoul, of the 7800 block of Shadowood Court; both suspects were charged with burglary, grand larceny, larceny with intent to sell and conspiracy in each of four separate incidents. Police reported what they termed a dramatic increase in residential break-ins in December through Jan. 18 this year. Most occurred in the afternoon hours, when homeowners and neighbors were not present.
    • Police seek suspect in unlawful entry, theft in West End (2012/1/24)
      Henrico Police are investigating an incident that occurred at a western Henrico apartment Jan. 20 and seeking the public's assistance in identifying a suspect. Officers responded to the 9500 block of Shepton Circle, near the intersection of Hungary Road and Springfield Road, after receiving a break-in call for service from the female adult victim. The victim reported that she heard a knock at the door, responded to answer and was met by the suspect, who asked if her boyfriend was home. She answered no, and the suspect forced his way into the apartment.

    • County to legislature: ‘Don’t hurt us’ (2012/1/24)
      "Don't hurt us." That's the clear and simple message being delivered by Henrico County's elected officials, administrators and lobbyists to the General Assembly, which convened in Richmond for a 60-day session last week. The missive represents a change from years past, during which county officials annually presented "wish lists" of top priorities to the county's General Assembly delegation. Six years ago, that list contained 14 items. This year, it's down to just one: Do no harm. By placing their sole focus on those three words, local officials hope to make a salient point to lawmakers: localities – Henrico included – are struggling to deal with their own financial problems and cannot afford additional funding cuts from the state.
    • New program promotes safety in digital life (2012/1/23)
      Virginia students will learn the benefits and dangers of the Internet and other technology, and may be drawn to math and science careers, thanks to an online program being offered free to the state’s schools. “Students today have access to the tools necessary to succeed – computers, the Internet, smartphones. But do they know how to leverage technology in a responsible and safe way?” said Virginia Secretary of Education Laura Fornash. “We owe it to our children and students to teach them how to use technology responsibly.” Fornash and other officials introduced the program, called My Digital Life, at a press conference at the state Capitol on Thursday.

    • Bills would repeal HPV vaccine requirement (2012/1/23)
      In 2007, the General Assembly passed a law requiring girls to be vaccinated against the cancer-causing human papillomavirus before entering the sixth grade. Now, two measures before the General Assembly would repeal that requirement: House Bill 95, proposed by Delegate Bob Marshall, R-Manassas; and HB 1112, sponsored by Republican Delegates Kathy Byron of Lynchburg and Timothy Hugo of Centreville.
    • Southwest Airlines coming to RIC (2012/1/20)
      The wait is over: Southwest Airlines is coming to Richmond International Airport. Southwest and its subsidiary, AirTran Airways, announced today that existing AirTran operations at 22 domestic and international airports – including Richmond – will be converted to Southwest during the coming months. Southwest purchased AirTran in May 2011 and began evaluating the markets it served to determine which ones would convert to Southwest after the merger. The announcement is good news for the Richmond region, which has sought Southwest's entry for years. The airline flies to a larger number of markets than AirTran or Richmond's other low-cost carrier, JetBlue.     • HCPS district-wide spelling bee to be held Jan. 23 (2012/1/20)
      The Henrico County Public Schools district-wide spelling bee will be held Monday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Hungary Creek Middle School auditorium, 4909 Francistown Road, Glen Allen. One winner from each of the 45 elementary schools and one winner from each of the 12 middle schools will compete to spell words generated by the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee office.

      Would a $100 fine and community service time stop you from flicking your cigarette butt out of your car window? Henrico Del. Joseph Morrissey, D-47th, thinks so. For the second year, Morrissey has proposed to include cigarettes in an established bill prohibiting litter on public property or private property without consent. Any violator would be required to perform community service in litter activities and pay a $100 penalty to the Litter Control and Recycling Fund.

      Henrico County Division of Police Email Media Notification Date: November 8, 2011 Wanted: 2008 Homicide Suspect Henrico – On December 31, 2008, at approximately 6:40am, Henrico County Fire was dispatched to the 5700 block of Crenshaw Road for a report of smoke observed coming from an apartment. Upon their arrival and after not being able to get a response to the door, Fire personnel forced entry into the residence. The victim, Kiona Braxton, 26, was found unconscious. Efforts to resuscitate Braxton were unsuccessful and she was pronounced dead at the scene. Upon further evaluation, it was determined that Braxton did not die as a result of the fire but was a victim of homicide.     • Positive Rabies Case - 11000 block Winfrey Rd. (2011/9/27)
      On Saturday, September 24, 2011, Henrico Police Animal Protection received a call in the 11000 block of Winfrey Road for a possible rabies exposure. It had been reported that the remains of a juvenile raccoon had been found inside a pen where two dogs were housed. Contact between the raccoon and the dogs were likely. The raccoon was submitted to the State Lab and positive test results were received on Tuesday, September 27, 2011. The Health Department and the owner of the dogs were notified of the positive test results. Both dogs will be quarantined at the owner’s home and have already received booster vaccinations.
